6th Grade

June 7, 2024

Dear Sixth Grade families,

Wow! We can’t believe we’re about to enter our last week. We really appreciate all the hard work students put in these last few weeks. We hope you all have a lovely Summer, and get some well deserved vacation time with your family.

Homeroom Updates:

Report Cards: report cards will be sent home on Friday 6/14. In your child’s report card envelope, you will find MAPS data, math placement letters and information about the Summer Math and Reading Challenges.  We recommend that all students take advantage of the summer math and reading challenge so they are ready for 7th grade.

Dress Code for Next Week: Students will have free dress on Thursday of next week, as we will be conducting room clean up. On Friday, students should dress in their Sunday best for the end of the year school Mass.

End of the Year Book Fair: We are partnering with a local bookstore, Paper Boat Booksellers, for an end of year book fair. We love the idea of supporting local business within the West Seattle community. It will be June 11-16th at their store on California Ave.  Customers need to mention Holy Rosary School at checkout so our school can earn credit.

Confirmation: A message from our Pastoral Assistant:

Dear incoming 7th grade parents,

Now is the time to start thinking about the Sacrament of Confirmation for the 2024-2025 school year!

To sign up for Confirmation and learn more, go to https://holyrosaryseattle.org/youth-confirmation.

To make sure you are receiving the latest communications about Confirmation (such as the long email that went out Monday morning), add evangelization@holyrosaryseattle.org to your address book or safe senders list. On that note, if you missed the email on Monday, check your spam folder or email evangelization@holyrosaryseattle.org, and I’ll gladly re-send it.

Who am I? My name is Jessica Kulwik. Together with my husband, I ran the Youth Confirmation program last year, and volunteered as a helper in previous years. This year, I am newly the Pastoral Assistant for Adult Evangelization, and will be running Youth Confirmation again.

I am so excited to walk with our confirmandi as they continue their journey of faith and prepare for the Sacrament of Confirmation.

In Christ,

Jessica Kulwik

Pastoral Assistant for Adult Evangelization

Curriculum Updates:

Math (Mrs. H):

Monday: Work on tessellations

Tuesday: *Final day to work on tessellation

Wednesday: *TBD – possibly math games

Thursday: *Cleaning day

Friday: *No class – Have a great summer!

Math (Mrs. C): Our presentations for our Summer Vacations have ended and it was fun hearing about their adventures. I did this same project a few years ago and one student was lucky enough to live out his planned vacation this past spring break! Mom reported it was more than $5,000, but we will blame that on inflation. 🙂 Be sure your child takes part in the summer math challenge. They have access to ALEKS all summer (until late August) so take advantage of this amazing program. I see a huge difference in the students who do math all summer vs. the students who did nothing.

Math (Mr. W): Hello HRS families, next week we will be reviewing some key concepts from chapter 12: Statistical Displays. As we won’t have time to complete the whole chapter, I’ve decided to pick a few key concepts from the chapter that they should know for 7th grade. For example, students are making histograms (a type of bar graph displaying the frequency of data) using some basic research. I’ve asked them to do a little bit of research to find a quantifiable set of data to make their own histogram. Students will also complete a line graph with data from classmates, or data from research. Have a great weekend and final week of school!

ELA: I can’t believe they have 1 week until they are in 7th grade! We will spend next week finishing up our 7th grade letters to teachers and then do a fun activity on Wednesday. Please Note: 7th graders are required to read at least 1 book from the Battle of the Books list this summer. I highly recommend students read more than one book to get a jump on the Battle of the Books.

Social Studies: 6A – On Monday 6A will be participating in a Greek Temple design and build competition. 6B completed this activity today in class! On Tuesday we will be participating in the Olympic Games in our Polis City-States groups. Students are encouraged to dress the part with a toga! (They can put the toga over their uniforms for Social Studies class!! Tuesday will be the last day for Social Studies. I have enjoyed teaching this great group of students for the past two years!! Have a great summer! Ms. Semandiris

Science: Students will explore vision. They will conduct an activity to see how their reaction time changes with practice. They will also compare their vision using one eye and then using both eyes.

Religion: We will wrap up this week with an end of the year reflection/activity and Catholic Social Teachings group presentation.
